Afghans Returned from Pakistan Face Problems

Jalalabad: The Afghan refugees who have returned from Pakistan and other countries to their homeland complain about many problems and hardships and lack of care by the government.

According to a report, about 40 thousand returned Afghans live in a camp called Chamtala, near the city of Jalalabad that lacks basic facilities like water supply and health and education centres.

A representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) yesterday visited the camp and, after meeting with people there, confirmed that the population was facing not only food shortage problems but also threats of land mines.

He pledged he would ask the donor countries in an upcoming meeting in Kabul to increase their assistance for the returned Afghans.

Residents of the camp told him that there were no drinking water, food and proper shelter, and no jobs, and that the camp is surrounded by fields full of land mines.

Reports say that about five million Afghans have returned to Afghanistan since 2002, while three million still live in Pakistan, Iran and other countries.
