Ban welcomes denuclearization progress in Korean Peninsula

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today welcomed the agreement between the Untied States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on denuclearization verification measures for attaining a non-nuclear Korean Peninsula.

Moon stressed on the need for all to meet their respective obligations to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea’s decision to let the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have access to the 5 Megawatt Experimental Nuclear Power Plant, the Nuclear Fuel Fabrication Plant and the reprocessing facility at Yongbyon has drawn positive feedback in general.

According to the agreement reached between the US and North Korea, the IAEA inspectors will make surveillance over the reprocessing facilities of nuclear plants in the country.

This progress is likely to reduce the existing distrust between the US and North Korea.

This agreement has also resulted in the US withdrawing North Korea from the list of nations ‘encouraging terrorism.’
