China and Burma Share A Situational Irony

Recently, a revelation has been discovered in regards to the earthquake that struck China with a magnitude of 7.9 has been discovered. It is a revelation that brings a sheer twist of irony to such a situation. The Paris Institute of Earth Physics had discovered the earthquake that hit China and cost nearly 10,000 lives was caused by the shift of tectonic plates within the Tibetan plateau.

In short, Tibet caused the earthquake that damaged China in a sense. However, it is expected that there will be aftershocks to come in the near future. China was not the only one to feel the earthquake. Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong had also felt the earthquake.

The international community is quick to respond.

But, this earthquake could be added to a list of issues that could look over Beijing as it is set to host the Summer Olympics this August.

In the strongest sense, both Burma and China share the same situational irony.

Back in 2007, Burma’s junta had instrumented a violent and bloody crackdown on pro-Democracy protests that started by the Buddhist monks. Just days before the people of Burma were to “vote” on a referendum on the country’s constitution, the country was ravaged by Cyclone Nargis that claimed a hefty death toll. Millions more are left at risk of dying by waterborne diseases.

Perhaps it was an omen against the referendum?

Months ago, there were pro-Democratic protests in Tibet started by Buddhist monks. The international community saw the violent crackdown by the Chinese government. And recently, China was hit by a devastating earthquake in which the death toll could continue to climb.

Perhaps that it was Tibet’s revenge against China?

There is a situational irony that parallels between China and Burma. Also, China and Burma are major allies with each other. Neither of these events are a laughing matter. But, there’s a strange sense of irony that brings up many questions.
