Chunnel Fire Causes Closure, Delays

A fire in the Chunnel, about seven miles from the French entrance, has forced the tunnel's operator, Eurotunnel, to close the 30 mile tunnel. The Chunnel, that connects Britain and France and transports thousands of travelers per day, might be close for a number of days as clean-up work continues.

Authorities believe the fire, which was reported at around 3:55 p.m. local time, was caused by a chemical truck that had departed from the French side en route to Britain. 50 people were evacuated from the tunnel due to the fire and no serious injuries were reported.

A fire crew responded quickly because they were already out dealing with another fire on a freight train. This is the second time a serious fire has broken out since the Chunnel opened in 1994.
