Earning a Degree through Trials
There are times during life when we’re discouraged and it’s difficult to reach our goals because of the hurdles that get in the way but I’d like to encourage you to pursue your dreams until you reach them because it’s always possible no matter how hard the struggles are that you have to face.
My friend suffered from heroin addiction for most of his adult life and it’s horrendously difficult to overcome it but after many attempts he prevailed and got himself clean. He spent some time helping and encouraging other heroin addicts and happily and gratefully living his life.
He wanted to be an English teacher and decided to study for his English Literature degree so that he could achieve his aim. He’s highly intelligent and was doing extremely well until something horrendous occurred. He had a brain haemorrhage at the age of forty. He also injured his back and was in a lot of pain.
For an average person it would have been terribly difficult to cope with these physical trials but for him it was almost an impossible situation because he required strong pain killers. The doctors put him on morphine but being a recovering heroin addict of course he soon experienced withdrawal symptoms and became addicted to it.
Morphine is much stronger than cut street heroin and he ended up with a worse habit. He was using morphine plus over an ounce of heroin per day which he sold in order to earn his supply.
Throughout his pain and horrific addiction problems he bravely continued with his studies and completed assignments. Eventually his habit became so bad that he knew he had to stop; he reached a point of utter despair. He attempted to go through his cold turkey at friend’s houses but his withdrawals were far too strong.
It seemed that there was no way out of his drug prison but he was determined so he managed to get the money to go into a rehabilitation centre where they detoxified him and he got clean once more.
He went back to the University and has earned his degree with a very high score. The reason I’m writing this is that if my friend can put himself through a University degree while fighting heroin addiction, suffering extreme backache and having a brain haemorrhage then you and I can do anything too. There are no limits apart from the ones we invent!
