Giuliani's Fundamental Campaign Error

Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, has ended his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in USA.

Despite his late 2007 lead in the polls, this should not have come as a suprise to anyone.

Giuliani's political views and actions mark him as a liberal Republican except on a law-and-order issues.

In pure political activity, it was unlikely to be forgotten that Giuliani in 1994 endorsed Democrat Governor Mario Cuomo for reelection over the Republican eventual winner George Pataki.

Giuliani's actions personal and official also were bound to raise questions.

The decision to pass on the early caucuses and primaries meant that he had no bandwagon effect as a winner.

Why did he run?  Giuliani made a fundamental campaign error in my view.  He mistook enthusiastic applause at events as support for a presidential run.  Approval of what they believe his actions were as mayor, especially on 9/11 does not necessarily translate into approval as a potential president.   -30-
