In California, Same-Sex Couples Scramble To The Altar

Today, United States Election Day 2008 is going to be a very long and intense day. It is highly probable that there is going to be must frustrations today as well. But, don’t give into the frustrations.

FIGHT THE FRUSTRATIONS!

After tonight, the next US President should be elected; provided that there will be no major problems popping up in the last minute. The next president will either been Democratic Presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois or GOP Presidential nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona.

However, this is not the only campaign race to keep in eye on.

One campaign that should also be watched carefully is in California. This campaign is the Proposition 8 campaign. After tonight, Proposition 8 will either rise into the air or sink into the sea.

Back in June, same-sex marriage was legalized. Opponents of same-sex marriage came up with Proposition 8. Should Proposition 8 pass, there would be ban on same-sex marriage placed into the California State Constitution.

This has been the most expensive campaign in California. Opponents and supporters of same-sex marriage have poured in millions of dollars into their respective campaigns.

As US Election Day kicks off, same-sex couples of California are scrambling to the wedding altar. Also, they are rushing to the altar to get married. They are not taking any risks.

So far John Duran of the West Hollywood area of Los Angeles, a councilman, has already performed quite a number of marriage ceremonies since Friday.

“This is the modern-day version of a shotgun wedding,” Duran explains.

But there is also humor in this regard.

“We kind of said Proposition 8 was like our version of getting knocked up,” said 28 year old Benjamin Pither. On Sunday, he married Joseph Greaves, his high school sweetheart.

While there are many people racing to the polls on Election Day, many same-sex couples are racing to the altars to get married.

Maybe they’ll rush to the polls to vote against Proposition 8 afterwards. Overall, the Proposition 8 is a campaign that needs to be carefully watched.
