US Financial Crisis Leads to Destruction of Indian American Family

October 08, 2008 The US financial crisis has started taking its toll when six members of an affluent Indian American family were destroyed in a gory incident in the suburbs of Los Angeles on 6th October’2008. Karthik Rajaram, 45, an Indian American killed his wife, mother in law and three sons before shooting himself down, some times between Saturday night and Monday morning (4th Oct to 6th Oct’08) at his Porter Ranch home he moved in two years ago.
Rajaram was an MBA from the University of California and earlier in his career worked for the accounting firm Price Water House Coopers and for Sony Pictures.
Bodies of the family members were discovered on Monday after Rajaram’s wife Subasri, 39, did not turn up for the pool car she used to commute every morning. To enquire, when the friends went to their house they found the day’s newspapers at the entrance door and their two cars still parked on the driveway. An all-pervading eerie silence around the house made them anxious and they were forced to call police.
Los Angeles deputy police chief Michel Moore rushed to the scene at Porter Ranch and recovered the bodies. The bodies of Rajaram and his wife had gun shot wounds on their heads.
Rajaram has left behind two suicide notes, one a ‘personal and confidential’ message for family members and the other for the police. In the letter to the police Rajaram said that economic hardship has left him with two options only, one to kill himself and the other to kill entire family and then himself.
As per primary investigation, Rajaram is said to have purchased a gun on 16th September’08 when the financial crisis just began to bite. Rajaram once made a single deal profit of $1.2 million from a venture fund investment, which was 70 times the capital he invested. His timely sell of his earlier house two years ago at $750000, fetched him a profit three times his capital, just before the meltdown of real estate prices across America. But all his fortunes made so far were wiped out by the recent financial market collapse leading to the pathetic end of his family.
