Belarus celebrated Maslenita Sunday, a 'farewell to Winter' in which an effigy of winter is burnt, and spring is welcomed. The Slavonic rite originated in pagan times, but was approved by Ortodox Church. In addition to burning the effigy of Winter, revelers wished wealth and health to every house in the village.
The event took place in Strochitsy village near Minsk (Belarus), and several hundred people came to the village to see the Winter 'burn,' to play outdoor games, and to eat symbolic pancakes after a hearty feast.
