Memin Pinguin, Racist Comic, Pulled from Wal-Mart Shelves
Memin Pinguin, a Mexican comic that some have label as racist is being pulled off of Wal-Mart shelves this week.
The comic, very popular in its home country of Mexico, is about a Cuban boy who looks somewhat like a black boy and somewhat like a monkey. One Dallas customer was offended by the abuse the boy suffers at the hands of white characters and the comic's offensive, racially charged language.
Activists accuse Memin Pinguin of playing to racial stereotypes and demoralizing the black race by making the character look stupid and disliked.
In 2005, the Mexican government issued a stamp featuring the main character in Memin Pinguin. Although they faced protest, the comic has come under strongest fire now that it is on bookshelves here in the United States.
