The Allure of Hydra
The allure of Hydra is enhanced by the reality that the entire island is prohibited to any kind of motorised vehicle and only donkeys can serve as a means to transportation. Hydra was first exposed in the fifties and sixties by a group of artists (such as Leonard Cohen or Axel Jensen), attracted by its authentic and magical beauty;
The conventional and magnificent architecture, the nonexistence of vehicles, the hospitability of the residents, orised vehicle and only donkeys can serve as a means to transportation. Beaches are not the main attraction of Hydra and are maybe its only negative point. The main bathing areas are situated over the rocky coastline, between the harbour and Kaminia. A very few spots can be qualified as real beaches since they are usually composed of pebble.
The atmosphere on Hydra is very healthy and sunny. During springtime, the temperatures are ideal, ranging from 15 to 25 degrees; it is the best period to visit the island, even if the weather may sometimes change suddenly, and the risk of rain is not impossible. Summer on Hydra is hot and sunny, like in most of the places in
Autumn is also a very pleasant season to visit Hydra. The weather is still warm and bathing is a real pleasure because the temperature of the sea is still of about 25 degrees, from the extreme heat of the summer. Nonetheless, the water is always crystal-clear and has an amazing colour. Winter is quite cold and rainy but temperatures rarely drop below 0 degrees. January and March are often sunny and warm, like a spring break in the middle of the winter. Snow is extremely rare and when it appears, it only covers the mountains and never settles.
