Democrats Demand Death Sentence

People’s Daily affairs have been affected by the valley bandh called by the protesting committee formed of friends and relatives of Ramhari Shrestha, who was murdered by Maoist People’s Liberation Army members.

Students and trade union activists affiliated to the Nepali Congress and the United Marxist-Leninist chanted slogans demanding for the death sentence to Maoist Supremo, who is expected to be the first president of Nepal.

Hundreds of Civil Servants and other private sector employees were seen walking to their offices because little public transport means could be noticed on the roads. Most of the major shops and schools and colleges in Kathmandu were closed though shops remained open in inner alleys.

People with stones in their hands were telling motorcyclists and cyclists not to move. They were seen to have punctured the wheels of some motorbikes and bicycles. The policemen standing nearby said that they were not ordered to stop the forceful behavior for fear of violence.

The Nepali Congress, the Unified Marxist Leninist Madhesi Janadhikar Forum have supported the bandh, demanding that Maoist-affiliated youth organization be dissolved immediately in order to reach a consensus for forming a new government. But Maoists, who have emerged as the largest political party of Nepal since the 10-April constituent assembly poll, say the youth organizations of other rival parties should also be dissolved if their own has to be done so.

After Prachanda emerged as the strongest leader in Nepal, it is not clear yet why some people have demanded a death sentence for him. Nepal’s interim constitution has ruled out any possibility of death sentence. At present, Nepal is on the way to drafting a full-fledged democratic constitution with the liberalization of former Maoist rebels whose equal participation has been considered inevitable for completing Nepal’s peace process.
