Dr Jitendra calls for joint crusade against Diabetes
Jammu,August 6(Scoop News) - "The challenge of rapidly rising Diabetes prevalence in the Indian subcontinent is too serious a matter to be left to a Diabetologist alone as it requires a consistent joint crusade involving various government and non-government health agencies as well as professional inputs not only from medical researchers but also from social scientists, educationists and cultural activists".
These observations were made by Dr Jitendra Singh, National Professor of Diabetes and noted author while addressing a "Diabetes Update CME" programme held here today for doctors, M.D. students and medical professionals on the theme and subject of "Unmet needs in the management of Type 2 Diabetes".
Dr Jitendra Singh, who was the Guest Faculty Speaker on the occasion, cited alarming statistical figures of Diabetes prevalence in India and said that even in a state like Jammu and Kashmir, where diabetes is said to be less common compared to several other States of India, the prevalence is no less than over 15% in urban areas.
In a lucid presentation aided by power point projections, Dr Jitendra Singh gave a detailed resume of some of the latest breakthroughs in the management of Diabetes and also some of the common difficulties and challenges that a medical practitioner is likely to confront while treating a patient of Diabetes. Some of the frequent treatment consequences of a strict Blood Sugar control include increase in body weight and hypoglycemia or sudden risky fall in Blood Sugar, said Dr Jitendra Singh but added that with a very wide range of new treatment options available today, these hassles can be overcome provided the modern practitioner of clinical medicine keeps himself updated from time to time and acquires necessary skills to chart out an ideal treatment regimen for each patient of Diabetes depending upon the patient's individual profile.
Dr Jitendra Singh spoke about a number of anti-diabetic drugs that have become available in the last two or three years and also enumerated the various drugs which are in the pipeline or under trial with likelihood of becoming available in the next few years.
While referring to 21st century radical modalities like "stem cell" therapy and "gene"therapy , Dr Jitendra Singh hastened to add that the basic "Mantra" however rests on lifestyle measures which include timely balanced diet, regular physical activity and freedom from Stress.
Dr S.K.Gupta and Dr Bharat Bhushan Gupta, former HODs Medicine GMC Jammu, jointly chaired the scientific session. The programme was marked by a lively academic interaction in which a number of doctors and medical students participated.
