Hoteliers to implement Section-4 of Indian Tobacco Act




 


            Jammu, June 02 -- To apprise about the provision of section-4 of Indian Tobacco Act-2003, the Development Commissioner, Udhampur in J&K, Ajay Khajuria convened a meeting with Hoteliers, Restaurant  and Banquet Hall owners, on Tuesday.


                        In the meeting various provisions of section-4 of the Act were discussed in detail. The meeting was told that no person would smoke in any public place which also includes Hotels, Restaurants and Banquet halls. According to the provisions of the Act, a hotel having 30-rooms or a Restaurant having seating capacity of 30 persons or more and in the airports, a separate provision for smoking area is required to e made.


            For the purpose, hoteliers were urged to display No Smoking sign boards of the standard size of 30x60 Cm. in the premises of hotels, restaurants and banquet halls. He asked for creating separate smoking zones in hotels and restaurants where this facility was not available so far.


             During the meeting, Food Inspector also distributed the sign boards “Smoking is prohibited” among the hoteliers to display them at the prominent places of their respective establishments.


            The Hoteliers appreciated the efforts of district administration and assured to put in their concerted efforts in implanting the provision of section-4 of the Act in their establishments.


 


            As part of “World No Tobacco Day” a programme was jointly organized at District Police Lines Doda by Department of Health Services and District Police today.


            A large number of people, policemen and officers attended the programme.


            A power-point presentation was made by District Programme Officer, District Mental Health Programme, Dr Zia Shoukat Mughal, wherein the extent of this addiction all over the country especially in Jammu and Kashmir was highlighted.


       The programme made aware the participants about the ways to enhance the motivation skills to quit smoking and tobacco use. The participants were also taught to overcome through behavior changes the difficulties which are faced by the people who want and try to quit the habit.


            Later, a question answer session was organized in which the audience raised specific and personal problems.


            Director Health Services, Jammu, Dr Jasbir Singh, Chief Medical Officer, Doda, Dr Ifthikar Ahmed Shapoo and Medical Superintendent District Hospital, Doda Dr M I Zargar inspired and encouraged the organizers to hold such an innovative programme.


       At the conclusion of the programme, the police officers expressed gratitude to the programme organizers and requested for conducting more programmes of this kind for the belt force to tide over the problems of addiction and stress which is prevalent in the force.


 


As a part of “World No Tobacco Day”, a Mushaira and a Culture Programme highlighting the ill-effects and direct and indirect consequences of smoking was held in Government Higher Secondary School, Baja Bain in Sunderbani block of Rajouri district.


         The programme also aimed at to create awareness among the masses and student fraternity about the importance of enforcement of Section 5 Cigarette Tobacco Act which was organized by District Information Officer, Rajouri.


         Principal of the Institution  Sukh Dev Vishisist presided over the function.


        Over a dozen of poets from different areas of the block participated in the Mushaira who recited the poems purely on anti Tobacco related products and gave a message to the people for implementation of the Section 5 where under imprisonment and fine or both is imposed for violating Section 5 of said Act.


        A culture programme was also presented by artists of Rakesh Kala Kendra based on ill-effects of consumption of tobacco.


        Principal of the institution asked the faculty members and student community to cooperate with the committee for effective implementation of the act so that this evil habit could be dealt with strictly.
