Log on to Speedtest.net, a website that provides an application which runs a small test on your internet connection and tells you what speeds you are getting currently. Measure speed at different times of day, especially during the hours when you use the connection the most, and at least once after midnight or 1 am (when competition for bandwidth is likely to be at its lowest level). This will average out the speed at different times and give you a fair idea of your overall speed. You will get detailed stats of upload and download speeds of your current ISP, and also a comparative chart which can help you pick a better deal.
