Myanmar Democracy Leader Suu Kyi May be Freed for 2010 Elections

Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi may be released soon by Myanmar's military regime so that she can play a role in next year's general elections, a senior Myanmar diplomat  Mr Min Lwin, a director-general in the Foreign Ministry confirmed. But there is still no time frame and no real moves have been made despite suggestions.

She has been detained for 14 of the past 20 years. She was recently sentenced to an additional 18 months of house arrest for briefly sheltering an uninvited American.

Her party, the National League for Democracy, has not yet decided whether to take part in the polls, which it says would be held under a Constitution established last year by undemocratic means. The Constitution includes provisions that bar her from holding office and ensure the military a controlling stake in the government.

While most people in Myanmar are interested in the 2010 general elections, the military regime has been delaying the preparation processes up to now.
