Natural Remedies for The Treatment of Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most widespread diseases in advanced nations and its incidence is known to the medical world since time immemorial. It is generally characterized by an abnormally elevated level of glucose in the blood, and excretion of this glucose through urine.
Diabetes is a nutritional disorder which results from the lack of proper insulin which leads to abnormalities in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism.
A main characteristic feature of this disease is that it can occur to all age groups from infants to the aged people.
The main symptoms of diabetes are copious urination and the urine passed daily is of pale color, has a sweetish odour and an acidic reaction.
A diabetic patient does not put on weight, usually feels thirsty and hungry most of the time and gets tired easily, both mentally and physically. He may also suffer from constipation, anemia, instant itching around the genital organs, general weakness and palpitations.
Diabetes is generally termed as a prosperity disease which is caused by overeating and resultant obesity. Eating too much food exerts a pressure on pancreas and weakens its normal activity. It has been estimated that, in case of obese persons the incidence of diabetes is four times higher and in case of severe obesity the incidence is thirty times higher.
Nature Cure for Diabetes: The treatment of diabetes should first commence with removing the basic cause of disease and building up health and vitality of the patient.
Diet plays a very important role in the treatment of this disease. A diabetic patient should be strictly lacto vegetarian and take a low fat, low calorie alkaline diet of high quality natural foods. Natural fruits and vegetables, nuts, dairy products and whole meal bread is the most ideal diet for diabetes.
Recent studies have established that bitter gourd is highly beneficial in the treatment of diabetes. It contains an ingredient known as plant insulin which has been found to be effective in reducing the urine and blood sugar levels. It is one of the ideal foods for a diabetic patient. Hence it should be included liberally in the diet of a diabetes patient.
Another remedy which is effective is the use of Jambhul fruit. It has a stimulating effect on the pancreas. The seeds of this fruit are also equally useful. They should be taken after they are finely dried and powdered. This powder should then be mixed in water, milk or curd.
Food products such as tea, coffee and cocoa have an adverse influence on the digestive tract; hence they should be avoided by the patient. Other foods such as white flour products, white bread, tinned food, sweets, pastries, chocolates, puddings and alcoholic drinks should also be refrained.
Manganese is one of the most important nutrients in the treatment of diabetes which is essential in the production of natural insulin. It is found in the outer covering of nuts, green leaves of edible plants, grains and in citrus fruits. Other important nutrients are polyunsaturated fatty acids, B complex vitamins and zinc.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are very valuable to a diabetic patient, as they contain both sugar and starch. Sugar fructose is one of the essential ingredients found in fresh fruits which does not require insulin for its metabolism and is well tolerated by diabetes patient.
Oils and fats should also be taken sparingly, as they lower down the resistance for proteins and starches. Raw foods should be particularly taken as they stimulate and increase insulin production. Nuts, home made cottage cheese and various forms of sourced milks are very good sources of proteins.
Overeating should be avoided and four to five small meals should be taken by the patient daily instead of two to three big meals.
Flesh foods should also be avoided by the diabetic as they increase the toxemic condition and reduce sugar tolerance. A pure vegetarian food on the other hand, especially which is made up of raw foods promotes and increases sugar tolerance.
Onion, garlic, cucumber, celery and string beans are also very beneficial. A good natural food which can be used by a diabetic patient is string bean pad tea. It is an excellent natural substitute for insulin. One cup of this tea is equal to one unit of insulin.
Cucumber also contains a hormone needed by the cells of pancreas for the production of insulin. Onion and garlic have proved to be helpful in reducing the levels of blood sugar.
Exercises also play a very important role in the treatment of diabetes. Walking, swimming and jogging are considered best. Yogic asana s such as shalabhasana, bhujangasana, paschimottasana, sarvangasana, dhanurasana, ardhmatsyendrasana, shavasana, yogic kriyas such as jalneti, kunjal and pranayamas such as anuloma-viloma, kapalbhati and ujjai are also very beneficial.
Thus we can conclude that many people in developed countries of the world are affected by diabetes and it is one of the dreadful diseases. Only natural remedies along with proper medication and treatment serve to be fruitful in the treatment of diabetes.
