Obama's talking points: Play down role of al-Qaeda on 9-11 attacks

A firestorm appears to be brewing as more and more Americans -- especially cops, firefighters and military personnel -- learn that the U.S. Commander in Chief is dictating what U.S. officials should and should not say during the 10th anniversary observance of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The main memorial is scheduled to be held at the site of where the World Trade Center's Twin Towers once stood in lower Manhattan. There also will be memorials the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where United Flight 93 went down after passengers attacked the Islamic terrorist hijackers.

In order for all Obama administration officials to be "on the same page," the White House issued "guidance," -- a/k/a talking points -- to all US officials on how to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

The President Barack Obama is calling for officials to use "positive" and "forward-looking" language and to avoid repeated references to al-Qaeda, the terrorist group responsible for the death and destruction on 9-11.

In addition, rather than commemorating the attack as one perpetrated against the United States and the American people, Obama wishes to concentrate on describing the 9-11 victims as "victims of global terrorism" and acknowledging that victims were citizens from almost 100 countries including Islamic nations.

The White House guidance was issued in two documents: one single-sheet memo was circulated to all federal agencies and a second document was sent abroad to all embassies and consulates.

The guidelines are the result of lengthy discussions at the White House, according to a federal law enforcement official. They are designed to highlight the steps taken thwart terrorist plots against the US since 9-11 and praise foreign allies in the fight against terror.

The commemoration of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 will be broadcast globally and will be viewed by many millions of viewers.

During his weekly address on Saturday, Obama stated that the 9/11 anniversary would be a day of "service and remembrance".
