On Wordpress

Wordpress, developed by Michel Valdrigi, is a self-hosted blogging software which is the official successor of b2cafelog. Since its start from 2003 this open source publishing tool has been providing bloggers the platform needed to voice their thoughts.

All of this is done cost effectively with nil charges, and since it is open source, it means there are thousands of people working on it from all over the world.

WordPress allows widgets to be rearranged without editing PHP or HTML code, and has a templating system, which includes themes that can be installed and switched between. It also features integrated link management; a search engine-friendly, clean permalink structure; the ability to assign nested, multiple categories to articles; multiple author capability; and support for tagging of posts and articles.

Automatic filters that provide for proper formatting and styling of text in articles (for example, converting regular quotes to smart quotes) are also included. WordPress also supports the Trackback and Pingback standards for displaying links to other sites that have themselves linked to a post or article.

And last of all,  WordPress offers a rich plugin architecture which allows users and developers to extend its functionality beyond the features that come as part of the base install.

Significant launches have been noticeable in WordPress such as Feb, 2005’s launch of version 1.5, Strayhorn, Jan, 2001’s launch of 2.2, Ella, uptil the latest upgrade of version 2.6 named Tyner in July 2008.

WordPress development is led by Ryan Boren and Matt Mullenweg. Mullenweg and Mike Little were co-founders of the project.

Trouble regarding WordPress and its security has struck, but it strives to keep up-to-date launching its native app for iPhone and iPod Touch along with the launch of iTunes App Store by Apple on 11 July 2008.
