PDD observing “Earth Hour” on March 31 in JK State
The event is being run by WWF throughout the world inspiring Government business communities and individuals to take a stand against climate change and celebrating their commitment to the planet earth by switching off their lights, the event is observed for one hour from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on last Saturday of March every year, which fall on March 31 this year.
Earth Hour is also being celebrated to make people believe that solution to our environmental challenges is possible by our aggregate efforts.
Earth Hour is one of the largest public campaigns that by a simple action of turning off lights reach out to all levels of the socio-economic strata big cities, small towns and even villages and not urban and educated masses alone.
Last year individuals from more than 130 Indian cities switched off their lights, showing how great things can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.
Climate change is the biggest threat facing all life on earth today sea level rise, glacier melting, more intense heat waves, more severe droughts and altering weather patterns are all examples of exacerbating climatic change that the world is witnessing. Unless we act now, we are on the track of a dangerously warming world. This is the time for us to be a part of the solution.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Dr. Asgar Hassan Samoon has asked all the Head of Departments and Deputy Commissioners to organize various programmes and symposium across the Valley to create awareness about the event, in collaboration with Power Development Department, Schools, Colleges, Media and Panchayats so that the event is a success. Public has been urged to whole heartedly participate in the event, by switching off all non-essential lights on March 31 between 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m.
