SKUAST-K for expansion of saffron cultivation in Jammu region
Chief Scientist from SKUAST-K, Dr. F.A. Nehvi along with Chief Agriculture Officer, Udhampur K.S. Sambyal and his team visited the area and inspected the on farm trials (O.F.T’s).
Chief Agriculture Officer briefed that the trials yielded good number of flowers in their first year i.e. during November –December-2011 and now in their multiplication phase. He disclosed that an awareness camp for farmers on Saffron cultivation was also organized by the department of Agriculture at Meer in which more than 50 progressive farmers and sarpanches and panches of the adjoining area were educated about the techniques and knowhow of saffron cultivation as their income generating source.
Dr. Nehvi satisfied with the layout, performance and multiplication of corms in the trials. He added that the performance shown by the trials in non-traditional areas is excellent and if it goes in the same way for next two years then this area shall be certified for Saffron cultivation under National Saffron Mission. While interacting with the beneficiaries he emphasized that they should go for intercultural and other agricultural operations from time to time in the trials so as to make them more productive.
