US plane accused of killing Afghan residents

t is claimed that over 20 people may have died after an air strike from a US plane. This happened in western Afghanistan according to an Afghan official.

The strike happened whilst action was being taken against Afghan militants. It's also reported that the battle also killed 25 members of the Taleban who were in the Farrah region.

The US military say that they will look into reports that suggest that residents could have been caught up in the battle.

The Afghan official who spoke of the incident said that he had seen over twenty bodies which were contained in two separate lorries. He also stated that women and children were among the dead.

The people responsible for the transfer of the bodies told the official that they were casualties of a United States air strike.

Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president has asked the forces there to take extra care to avoid citizens getting caught up in the fighting.

The American army have put out a statement saying they were in the area and would be looking into the reports of the deaths.

Afghan officials say that the fighting started after around 100 Taleban struck at a police checkpoint killing three officers. The militants then went on into a village and killed people that they suspected of spying.

US strikes were carried out as the fighting continued and Taleban militants hid in nearby homes.

The Afghan president is due to meet Barrack Obama on Wednesday and the US will increase its forces to 68,000 by the time the year is out to fight the insurgents.
