Mental Illness A Global Health Problem

Long before the HIV-AIDS started to bring fears and sufferings to the human beings, the world was already in constant threat of various illnesses and one them is mental illness. We’ve heard, seen and encountered news and stories about different diseases being given much attention by the different health experts and pharmaceutical companies from around the world, but not mental illness.

In a recent United Nations study on mental health shows that 12% of the global population is suffering from mental illness. Those who know the equation of 12% better understand what it is really means. Exactly, there are millions of people suffering from mental problem that, as the UN reported, is definitely alarming.

Many reasons were established why mental illness have grown that far: poverty, hunger, financial and family problems, drug addiction, genetic characteristic and other factors related to social and religious aspect that have a direct influence to life.

If this health problem continues to be ignored, we might end-up at the mercy of being ruled by jackals, terrorists and bloodthirsty individuals or groups afflicted with severe mental illness.

As they say, “mental health is physical health.”
