Treatment options for thyroid problems

There are different treatment options depending on the reason for thyroid malfunction. Once the cause of your particular thyroid condition is diagnosed your doctor will decide which treatment option to employ.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition that causes hypothyroidism. Hashimoto's sometimes kills the thyroid entirely. The usual course of treatment for someone with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is daily medication for life.

Grave's Disease is another autoimmune condition that causes thyroid problems. With Grave's Disease a person develops hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid condition. A common treatment for Grave's Disease is radioactive iodine to kill the excess thyroid cells. Along with the radioactive iodine treatments, medications are given that interfere with thyroid production. If you are having heart palpitations as a symptom with your Grave's Disease your doctor may prescribe beta-blockers. When these treatment options fail to alleviate symptoms a thyroidectomy is used in which the entire thyroid gland is removed. Once this happens a patient will become hypothyroid and be required to take daily thyroid medication.

People with goiters or nodules on their thyroid often need no treatment. If they start to have problems such as pain or difficulty swallowing, an operation is performed to remove the goiter, nodule, or sometimes the entire thyroid, depending on the severity.

Changes in diet can help with thyroid symptoms. Soy can reduce production of thyroid hormones, so eliminating or greatly reducing the amount of soy in your diet will help. There is evidence that eating a low carb diet helps thyroid patients with weight problems associated with thyroid conditions.

Reducing stress will help keep hormones regulated and relive thyroid symptoms. Stress in the body produces cortisol. An overabundance of cortisol has been linked to thyroid problems. Practice meditation or other relaxation techniques to cope with stress.

Hormone imbalances caused by menopause are another problem women face. Make sure to take any medication your doctor prescribes so as to minimize hormone problems.

Keep regular checkups with your doctor. If you go to regular scheduled appointments any changes in your thyroid condition will be caught quickly. It's imperative to keep on top of thyroid treatment. Regulating your medication dosage at the first sign of a problem will help with thyroid symptoms tremendously.

Taking care of yourself and any health problems you have is the best way to treat a thyroid condition. Leading a healthy lifestyle that includes proper diet, stress reduction, and using medications as prescribed is required. Thyroid conditions are serious and can cause extreme problems if not taken care of. Be good to yourself and do whatever it takes to control your thyroid condition.
