WHY WOMEN ARE MORE PRONE TO OBESITY?

Preliminary Research findings arising out of a study conducted by the University of New South Wales suggest that a female hormone estrogen could be one of the reasons for women tend to become more obese than men. On an average, women have 6 to 11 percent more body fat than men. According to this study, the likely reason for this could be the impact of estrogen as it reduces their ability to burn energy after eating which results in more fat being stored around the body.

It could also be the way nature has conditioned a woman’s biological growth. Female puberty and early pregnancy times of increased estrogen are seen as efficient fat storage in preparation for fertility, fetal development and lactation. This could also be the reason for women not losing body fat due to exercising inspite of the fact that they burn off more fat than men while exercising.

The study however provided a rider by stating that factors contributing to obesity are complex and consist of both genetic and environmental factors.
