Which are the 21 most popular health information websites?
Eighty percent of American internet users, or some 113 million adults, have searched for health information on the internet, according to the ebizMBA site (the e-business knowledge base). But only 15% of health seekers actually check the source and date of the health information to see who else has validated the information and whether the sites are reliable, credible, and accurate. See the article and links to the 20 most popular health sites at, "Top 20 Most Popular Health Websites | December 2009."
Around 10% of internet health information searchers check the sources or do any amount of fact-checking most of the time. Do you check out the studies and other information or compare doctor's opinions online against facts? How do you separate the opinions from the facts?
Most consumers don't feel qualified to judge whether a study is flawed or not because they don't have the experience in health care research, either integrative, alternative, or in a specialty.
The internet is not only filled with everyone's opinion. There's credible information on the internet. But how do you separate the unsubstantiated information from the proven? And if some study has proven a conclusion this year, will it be changed next year with with further studies?
How do you start? The first step is to check the source and date of information and to review more than one website on any given topic. Also read the reviews from people in the various health care fields. Reviews of a study from a naturopath or homeopath may take one side, a professional from integrated medicine may report another approach, fact, or opinion. And traditional or conventional medical practitioners may have a different opinion, fact, or research study results to report. How do you put it all together to make a wise choice?
A November 2009 ebizMBA report ranked the largest, most popular health information websites. The top four are: WebMD, National Institutes of Health, MedicineNet, and Mayo Clinic. Check out these sites.
