An Advent Psalm Put To Music
An Advent Song Of Old:
O Come O Come Emmanuel, this is Isaiah's prophesy from God put to music. The lyrics relate man's hunger to have God's promises fulfilled.
"O come o come Emmanuel,
And ransom, Captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the son of God appears.
Oh come thou dayspring, come and cheer,
Thy people with their Advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadow, put to flight.
O come thou rod of Jesse,
Free thine own from satan's tyranny
From depths of hell, thy people save,
And give them victory o'er the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel,
Shall come to thee O Israel"
As I sit with my Bible reading about that fateful night long ago, I can hear the voices of God's people crying out to their God and my God in their bondage and desperation.
For more than 4,000 years the Hebrews the chosen people of God were made to roam after their escaping slavery in Egypt, lead into the wilderness, scattered again and again through the tyranny of their captives wishing, hoping, and praying, for their God to finally send a redeemer as promised by God to deliver them and free them. For 4,000 years they have heard of their deliverer, but none appeared.
Finally God has everything perfectly lined up as only a God can do, so that Jesus His Son can finally enter into the world, and it is in this time of the year we have chosen to look back and remember the fulfillment of God's promise the arrival of the Son of God made man, Jesus, born of a virgin.
Through Jesus, and his crucifixion and resurrection, "Spiritual Death, for those who accept Jesus becomes no more. Through his crucifixion souls in the grave who accept Jesus are freed and returned to God in heaven. Through Jesus death and resurrection, Satan will be defeated, and all who are believers and followers of Jesus will be caught up with Jesus in heaven.
