Chandellas were ruling from Bundelkhand in central India



 The Chandellas were ruling from Bundelkhand in central India. Mahoba was their capital, and they grew into importance during the 9th century. Yashovarma (925-54 AD) of this dynasty defeated the Prathiara ruler Devapala ans secured Kanauj. He spread his empire in the Ganga-Jamuna Doab. He invaded Doab and defeated the Palas ofBengal.  


 


He built the Chaturbhuja temple at Khajuraho and made this place his capital. Sanskrit poet Bhavabhuthi adorned his court and composed poems like `Malati Madhava’, `Uttarama Charita’ and Mahavira Charita.’ Vakpathi was another poet in his court. Yashovarman’s son Dhanga (950-90 AD) was a famous ruler of the dynasty. He built many famous temples of Khajuraho. Kalinjar was also his capital. Though the Chandella territory shrunk in size after him, Kirthvarma of this dynasty regained the lost territory. He was a scholar and built a large tank called Kiratsagar. The Khiljis conquered the territory of the Chandellas.     


 


The founder of the Rathod or Ghahadawal dynasty was Chandradeva. Kanauj became his capital in 1908. his grandsomn Govindacandra (1104- 1154) extended his territory till Bihar. He faced the invasion of the Turks from Afghanisthan successfully. His son Vijayachandra’s son Jayachandera fought against Mohammad Ghori and lost his life. Rathod rule thus ended.
