In this island paradise, visitors speak dreamily of the promiscuousness of Minicoy women

 The beautiful islands are made of coral and together occupy an area of just 28 sq km. the most idyllic of them all is Bitra, which is a stretch only a quarter of a mile in area but surrounded by a magnificent 25 –sq mile lagoons.  

Minicoy, the southernmost and largest is land, is also unlike the rest for its islands speak Mahl, not the corruption of Malayalam which is the Laccadive dialect. In social mores too, the Minicoys are most emancipated. Most of the men are sailors and away at sea, so the women control the island’s affairs. In this island paradise, visitors speak dreamily of the promiscuousness of Minicoy women.

Kavaratti islands

It is the most centrally situated island of the group and, for the visitor, it serves as a base for exploring other areas. Kavaratti is the administrative headquarters of the islands. It has a beautiful mosque with intricate carvings, all executed by the local craftsmen. On the northern end of the islands is a small inland lake which provides a beautiful natural pool for swimming.
