Unmarried Adivasi Mothers on a Rise in Tribal Colonies

The number of unmarried mothers is always on rise in the tribal districts of Kerala, especially Wayanad. But the latest reports show that Wayanad is not alone when it comes to the exploitation of adivasi women.

The case is even more grave as reports  show that in the 8 adviasi colonies of Perinthalmanna taluk in Malappuram district of Kerala alone there are about 13 unmarried mother between the age group of 13-18. More than 200 such cases are reported in Wayanad.

The alarming thing is that the exploitation is done with the knowledge of the parents themselves.  Many people from outside, including the elite section, make use of the unfortunate adivasi girls for their needs.

Kalyani aged 18 became a mother at the age of 13. Her life is nothing other than that of a sex worker now. It is enough to provide liquor to the fathers to get their daughters for sexual abuse.

It is very pathetic as most of the advasis cannot even determine the paternity of their children. Even if complaints were lodged, adivasis were denied justice because the guilty in most cases happened to be someone from the higher echelons of the society.
