Atlantic Hurricane Season 2012
Summer is great for those snow birds that love going to the gulf coast beaches to get away from the cool temperatures of those city’s located in the northern region of the United States.
What’s not so great about the south and all those gulf coast beaches is when the month of June comes around and hurricane season officially begins.
Yes the Atlantic Hurricane Season begins every year on June 1st and active hurricanes can be spawn in Atlantic Ocean from June until November.
Hurricanes can also develop in the Gulf of Mexico very quickly during this four month period because of the changing water temperature in the Gulf.
One of the five deadliest hurricanes that hit the gulf coast was Hurricane Katrina and it devastated a big portion of New Orleans, Gulfport Mississippi, and Mobile Alabama in August 2005.
The National Hurricane Center has forecasted the number of tropical storms to be between 9 and 15 to develop either in the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico in 2012.
When a tropical storm comes ashore and hits the mainland the storm usually brings intense rain and lighting with a high chance of a tornado being spawn off by the circling winds.
Areas that are at a greater risk of hurricane damage are those areas located nearest any shoreline and hurricanes can spawn off many tornados making the destruction and devastation even worse.
As a rule of thumb the best time to start planning for getting ready for hurricane season is when the time gets set forward for spring.
When planning and preparing for hurricane season a person needs to ensure they have the following items where they can easily be found. (Flashlight, batteries, canned food, can opener, bottled water, medicines, important papers, blankets, toiletries, and an emergency evacuation plan for your family and your pet if you have one.
You also need to protect your home and property by securing any lawn furniture or any other lightweight objects in the yard and put them into some type of storage building.
If you don’t have storm windows or storm shutters installed on your home to protect your windows you will want to buy plywood from your local hardware store early in the hurricane season because that is the first thing most hardware stores are sold out of quickly.
