Grewal said, “A farmer is very demoralized man today with rising input costs and hardly any returns”. “Farmers are sometimes badly hit by natural calamites like droughts, floods and hailstorms which results in huge losses to their crops and moreover government’s reluctant approach to the same has been forcing them to commit suicide as they feel helpless and dejected”, he stated.
Reiterating BJP Kissan Morcha’s demand for implementation of M.S. Swaminathan Commission report, he said that the suggestions putforth by him, if implemented, will end the miseries of the farmers across the country.
Asserting that BJP kissan Morcha has been fighting for the rights of the farmers in India through different democratic means on roads and on the floor of the Parliament, Grewal assured the farmers that BJP Kissan Morcha will continue to fight for them.
Mentioning a letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh written by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Grewal said that the central government’s policies were anti-farmers and the present MSP calculating system is incapable of bailing out farmers from the serious economic crises they are reeling under. “Pawar’s letter echoes the issue the BJP kissan Morcha had been raising”, he claimed, adding that Pawar had vehemently condemned the ban imposed on export of cotton and sugar in the country and termed the decision as anti-farmer.
“According to the letter, the prices of cotton have tumbled and sugar is not being exported despite a decision taken in March. It is worrisome as farmers are not getting Rs 8000 crores pending towards sugarcane crushing mills, Grewal maintained.
