How Would You Define "Social Media" for Someone from 1900?

In preparation for my Columbia Business School course on Social Media and Entrepreneurship, I asked publicly on Twitter for definition of the term "social media." To avoid definitions full of buzzwords and hackneyed jargon, I specified that the definition should be for a person from 1900. See responses below, using social media tool Storify.
