Suicide is not a crime in India Now

In a recent Humanisation and Decriminalisation report would be submitted to the government shortly, Law Commission of India mentioned not punishment was required for those who attempt suicide.

In its 42nd report submitted in 1971, the Commission had recommended repeal of section 309 of the IPC. Under this section, there is a provision of one-year simple imprisonment or fine, or both for those who attempt suicide.

"criminal law must not act with misplaced zeal and it is only where it can prove to be apt and effective machinery to cure the intended evil that it should come into picture." as per law commission likely to suggest.
