Classy Gabby Giffords Exits Congress With Grace
On this quiet Sunday the mainstream media announced that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who has been personally battling the after effects of a shooting in a Tucson strip mall a little more than a year ago, will not be seeking re-election and has resigned her House seat.
Ms. Giffords made her announcement with the grace and optimism she has been known for, especially as she continues her battle to fully recover from her injuries.
Even before, she was a moderate that attempted to see both sides of the major issues facing Arizonans, while walking the fine line between maintaining her partisan positions, and her own experience and beliefs. I did not agree with her on all, but her more moderate stances on many will be greatly missed in Arizona, a state in which Constitutional "conservatism" on both sides of the aisle is in short supply.
The whole truth on what transpired to bring Ms. Giffords to the national spotlight and the tensions which exist there which have increased ten fold in the past twenty five to thirty years may never be known.
But she has made a wise personal decision for her and her family, of that I am more than sure.
A special election will be held in order to fill her seat, per Arizona's Constitution.
Let the games begin (and scavengers reveal themselves). Politics is a dirty game, as those mainstream media analysts and "experts" can attest.
Ms. Giffords would be wise to distance herself from this race, if not the state at this point in its history.
There are few, really, Arizonans left there who have lived there as long as she has. Optimism for Arizonans is in short supply, and gets less with each and every decade, that there will be any real change.
As only another "Zonie" can know.
