Picnic Locales Kalahatti Falls is a beautiful backdrop to a much –frequented picnic spot
Kalahatti Falls is 13 km on the Ooty –Sigur –Mysore road. The 70m high falls form a beautiful backdrop to a much –frequented picnic spot. The Sigur dam nearby is an added attraction and can also be a picnic destination if Kalahatti is too crowded.
Glenmorgan, about 25 kilometers from Ooty, is also a lovely picnic spot commanding an excellent view of the Mudumalai Game sanctuary. A trolley ride down the 4 km ropeway leading to Singara power house from the Glenmorgan headworks is an exciting experience.
Mukurti peak, 26 kilometers Ooty, resembles a severed nose. Hence, it’s name, muku meaning nose and ardha (half). The road to Mukurti is beautiful, winding through Governor’s Shola. The peak is held sacred by the Todas to whom it is `the gateway to heaven.’ The Mukurti River, the peak 2,554 meters that forms a ruggedly beautiful backdrop to the dam across the River, and the picnicking possibilities offered by the place are not to be missed.
The Pykara River 19 kilometers with its dam and power plant, is also a much-frequent picnic locale.
Avalanche, about 25 kilometers from Ooty, got is its name after an avalance occurred there in 1823. The name has stuck though nature has healed the havoc. The forests here are cool and fragrant, ideal for trekking. Fishing can be done in the Avalanche River, where a lot of trout can be found.
