Soccer and hockey are the spectator sports of Tamil Nadu but cricket continues to have a large and informed following. Chepauk cricket crowds still display a sensibility that may be found in England today. M. J. Gopalan, Ram Singh, Rangachari are cherished names. Tamil Nadu won the Ranji Trophy about forty years ago, with Gopinath and Kirpal Singh as the stars.

Venkataraghavan, VV Kumar, Belliappa and Prabhakar, Srikkanth are players of national stature, but Tamil Nadu will never go in for a relentlessly batting machine like Mumbai. The Tamils prefer subtleties and graces and would rather go for a risky late cut than a dead straight bat.
