The Holy places of the Hindus in Uttar Pradesh

It is surrounded by Tibet and Nepal in the north; Himachal Pradesh in the north- west; Haryana in the west; Rajasthan; Madhya Pradesh in south and south –west; and Bihar in the east. Its physical boundaries are the Himalayas in the north, the Vindhya ranges in the south, the Ganga and Yamuna and Gandak Rivers on its western, southern and eastern flanks. Many of the rivers mentioned in the Vedic and post-Vedic literature –the Ganga, Yamuna, Saryu, Rapti, Gomati, Gandaki and Betravati –irrigate its land.

Geographically, the state falls into four natural parts- the northern mountainous region; the sub-mountainous area; the alluvial plain bounded by the Ganga and Yamuna rivers and the plateau area of the Vindhyas. Since Mt. Everest falls within Nepal, the hugest peak in India, which is the second highest one of the Himalayas is Nandadevi (height 7698 meters)  which is as a part of Uttar Pradesh.

Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamnotri and Gangotri, all the holy places of the Hindus, lie in Himalayan Uttar Pradesh. The theory and practices of transcendental meditation, which has recently attracted so much attention, is also centered in this region, especially in Hardwar and Rishkesh, two places of Hindu pilgrimage made beautiful and holy the rivers Ganga.
