Elimination of Kishenji and Maoist Surrenders Boost Mamata

Elimination of Kishenji and a spate of surrenders by Maoists in Bengal have Mamata beaming with success and confidence in Jangal Mahal politics ( a forest zone adjoining areas mainly of the three districts of West Midnapur, Puruliaand Bankura, which has been the hot bed of Maoist activities for the last three years).

On Friday a smiling Mamata presented Suchitra Mahato- one of the key planners of the 2010 Silda Camp massacre of as many as 24 Eastern Frontier Rifles men- who surrendered to her at Writers Buildings. Suchitra was last seen with the Bengal area Maoist Commander Kishenji in a battle with the central and state joint forces in Burisole forest where Kishenji was gunned down. There were a spate of Maoist surrenders since Mamata took over as chief minister. Suchitra joined Peoples war group in 1999

The other Maoists who surrendered after Mamata became chief minister are-

  1. Prakash Acharya on 22nd Oct’2011(who incidentally arrived straight at Mamata’s Kalighat residence for surrender)
  2. Maoist annihilation squad member Durjodhan Rajvar and wife Lalita surrendered on 16th Nov’2011 to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Purulia District.
  3. Maoist top level commander Jagori Baske with her husband Rajaram Soren surrendered before Mamata on 19th Nov’2011
  4. Rabi Mandi, a member of the deadly Ajodhya Hills Maoists squad surrendered before SP of Purulia district on 21st Nov’2011
  5. Chunaram Soren, also a Maoist squad member surrendered at Midnapur district court on 9th Dec’2011
  6. Bhajahari Mahato, Sukhdev Mahto, Lambodar Majhi and Karan, all Maoist squad members, surrendered to Mamata at Jhargram on 12th January’2012
  7. Chiranjit Mahato and wife Anima surrendered before SP, West Midnapore on 7th Feb’2012.

In fact it is the pro-poor image of Mamata coupled with her carrot and gun policy as well as her declared policy of development in Jangal Mahal –a shrewd combination of these three factors-that made her romp home with big success in Jangal Mahal and she is now rightly in a position to fire at the CPIM led opposition for their failure to bring the Maoists to main stream of social life during their long innings at writers buildings.
