J&K ELECTION 2008-Campaigning on for seventh & final phase of J&K Assembly



Jammu/Srinagar,December 20 –Election campaigning is on for the 7th and final phase of Assembly polls to be held on the 24th of this month in Jammu and Kashmir.

After the successful conduct of sixth phase of polling in sixteen assembly segments, the focus has now shifted the 21 assembly segments going to polls in the final phase.

According to officals reports, polling will take place in 11 assembly segments of Jammu District, 2 constituencies of Samba district and 8 constituencies in Srinagar district.


As many as 393 candidates are contesting from 21 constituencies of Srinagar, Samba and Jammu districts, which are going to polls in the seventh and final phase of J&K Assembly Elections 2008, on December 24, according to the list of contestants for the seventh phase made available by the J&K Election Department.


This is the highest number of contestants in any phase of the seven-phase J&K Assembly Elections 2008.


Among these constituencies, Jammu West has the distinction of having the highest number of 34 contestants in the electoral fray. It is also the highest number of candidates contesting from any constituency in all the seven phases of the Assembly elections. As many as 31 women contestants and 151 independents are also in the ring in this phase of elections.


A total of 16,91,797 electors, including 18,214 service electors, are eligible to vote in the seventh phase.


In the seventh phase, 152 candidates will contest from Srinagar district which include 18 from Hazratbal, 16 from Zadibal, 14 from Idgah, 10 from Khanyar, 21 from Habbakadal, 29 from Amirakadal, 26 from Sonawar and 18 from Batmaloo Assembly constituency. The total electors in Srinagar district are 5,57,279.


In Jammu district, 210 contestants are in fray, out of which 25 are in Nagrota, 17 in Gandhinagar, 20 in Jammu East, 34 in Jammu West, 27 in Bishnah, 14 in R. S. Pura, 19 in Suchetgarh, 15 in Marh, 11 in Raipur-Domana, 21 in Akhnoor and 7 in Chhamb constituency. The total electorate in Jammu district is 9,57,490.


As many as 151 independent candidates are in fray out of the 393 contestants from 21 Assembly constituencies in Srinagar, Samba and Jammu districts, which will go to polls in the seventh phase of J&K Assembly Elections 2008 on December 24.


This is the highest number of independent candidates contesting in any phase of the seven-phase J&K Assembly Elections 2008.


Among them, 57 independents are contesting in Srinagar district, eight in Samba and 86 in Jammu district.


Constituency-wise, Jammu West has the highest number of 19 independents in fray, followed by Bishnah constituency, also in Jammu district, which has 16. Amirakadal Assembly constituency in Srinagar district has 15 independents contesting elections this time around.


Out of the 57 independent contestants in Srinagar district, six are in fray in Hazratbal Assembly constituency, seven in Zadibal, five in Idgah, two in Khanyar, nine in Habbakadal, 15 in Amirakadal, nine in Sonawar and four in Batamaloo Assembly constituency.


Similarly, out of the 31 candidates contesting in Samba district, eight are independents. They include three in Samba Assembly constituency and five in Vijaypur.


Likewise, out of the total 86 independent contestants in Jammu district, nine are contesting from Nagrota Assembly constituency, seven in Gandhinagar, seven in Jammu East, 19 in Jammu West, 16 in Bishnah, two in R. S. Pura, six in Suchetgarh, three in Marh, one in Raipur-Domana, 14 in Akhnoor and two in Chhamb Assembly constituency.


 Of the 393 contestants, there are 31 women in fray in the three districts of Srinagar, Samba and Jammu, which are going to polls in the seventh and final phase of J&K Assembly Elections 2008 on December 24.


In the seventh phase, the number of women contestants is the highest in any of the earlier six phases of the elections.


The 21 constituencies, also the highest in any of the phases, where polling is being held in the seventh phase of elections are Hazratbal, Zadibal, Idgah, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Amirakadal, Sonawar and Batmaloo, in Srinagar district, Samba and Vijaypur in Samba district and Nagrota, Gandhinagar, Jammu East, Jammu West, Bishnah, R. S. Pura, Suchetgarh, Marh, Raipur-Domana, Akhnoor and Chhamb, in Jammu district.


Among the 31 women contestants, as many as 12 are in fray in Srinagar, two in Samba and 17 in Jammu district.


While three women contested in the first phase, another two were in fray in the second phase of elections. In the third phase, five women contested while as 10 were in fray for the fourth phase of elections. Similarly, in the fifth phase, five women were in the poll ring while as in the sixth there were 11 women contestants.
