New Mexico May Close State Parks

Because of budget cuts and funding shortages across the board, the state of New Mexico may be closing state parks to save money.

This will affect many residents of New Mexico, for both those who rely on the salary paid to them by the state for working in parks, and for those who work in food service or hospitality and rely on tip money from tourists. Especially hurt will be the village of Ruidoso, which relies on revenue from tourists at the state parks, horse track, and casino, in addition to ski season.

State officials say that the cuts will help the state save $94 million. No word right now as to how much income is expected to be lost as a result of the closures.
