Obama to Name Financial Team Monday, Geithner to Treasury
It is being reported today that President-Elect Barack Obama will nominate Treasury Department veteran and current NY Fed President Timothy Geithner to the post of Treasury Secretary on Monday.
This appointment quashes rumors that Mr. Obama might be considering former Clinton Treasury Secretary Larry Summers for the post. Summers' consideration was marred by his history of controversial remarks he made while President of Harvard University. Obama sources say those remarks did not affect his decision, rather that Geithner represents a "change" from Clinton-era appointments.
Other Cabinet leaks today: Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) will be offered Secretary of State and she will accept and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson will be nominated for Secretary of Commerce on Monday. Richardson has been Secretary of Energy and the US Ambassador to the United Nations.
None of these appointments are confirmed, only reported.
