Palm Oil-The Answer To Illegal Logging.
Was it a case of killing two birds with one stone. Yes and maybe so. The opening up of large tracts of swamp land covering the whole area of the Rejang delta seemed to be working really well.
Once this area is famous for illegal logging. Much to the government's chagrin, employing more forest rangers does not seem to result in arrest and charging those caught are pretty hard.
The activities, that is illegal logging, was a well planned operation. The locals did the felling and transporting from the forest. It will be then, camouflaged and hidden among the low brush that grows too well along our streams. When there is enough supply, a tangker will come chugging in the night and hauled in the logs. Selling was not hard as there are many illegal sawmills around. See, it seems so easy.
Not really so. These people are controlled by triads and men, are they mean! The government, in their effort to check this dangerous activities, sought out several plantation operators and awarded some areas to them. They are in turn asked to bring along the native landowners as partners in their venture.
After a few years, the oil palm didl bear fruit and the profit are shared between them. The native landowners are happy, the estate operators are smiling all the way to the bank and the gangsters have no more logs to steal.
