Project Cancelled But Taxpayer Dollars Kept By Local Government

The government of Nassau County, New York on lovely Long Island USA (where I live) is seeking to amend its HUD (US Department of Housing & Urban Development) approved Section 108 loan to rellocate $850,000 in Section 108 funds from the Memorial Economic Development Corporation (MEDC)  to the Glen Cove Community Development as the planned project was dropped.

According to the legal notice in NEWSDAY, "The funds will be used to support the Glen Cove Creek Revitalization, a mixed-use redevelopment on a Brownfields waterfront property in the City of Glen Cove.  The 50-acre redevelopment area has been the target of a decade-long development partnership by the City of Glen Cove, the Glen Cove Industrial Development Agency, the Glen Cove Community Development Agency and a broad range of state and federal agencies."  I am curious whether any of the land was expropriated by eminent domain so it could be turned over to developers.

For those unfamiliar with these references: Glen Cove is a City in Nassau County and our current County Executive Thomas Suozzi's home base.  His uncle, father and himself all served as Glen Cove Mayors.  Suozzi is currently running for reelection and is very ambitious.  Some think he hopes to be the first Italian-American US president. Brownfields is a term referring to sites contaminated by pollutants, especially of a toxic nature.

We have a project abandoned and instead they want to shift the taxpayer funds to another scheme.  How typical of the bureaucrat and politician! Instead, return the funds to the Federal taxpayer and let private enterprise develop the Glen Cove Creek Revitalization at their own expense without resort to the taxpayers, whether federal, state or local.  The Community Development Agencies should be abolished.  -30-
