Long ball was the Phillies friend in the scorching heat, as the Phillies went long often, to beat the Padres 8-6.
Michael Martinez hit his second, Chase Utley nailed two for six total this season and Ryan Howard, in a pinch hit role, hit homer number nineteen.
The Phillies also continued hitting doubles, today hitting four. Jimmy Rollins (17), Domonic Brown (10), Carlos Ruiz (13) and Ross Gload (3) all connected for two baggers today.
Chase Utley had a better than average day going three for three with a walk, and four RBI.
Kyle Kendrick started for Philadelphia going 5.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits, two walks and one strikeout, with no decision.
Michael Stutes came on in relief and gets the win improving his record to 5-1. Ryan Madson pitched the ninth struck out two and allowed one hit, to get his seventeenth save of the year.
Chad Qualls (4-5) gets the loss for San Diego. This was the ninth straight loss for the Padres against the Phillies.
The Phillies take their record to 63-36 and the Padres are now 44-57. Both teams meet for game three on Sunday and close out the four game series on Monday with the Phillies up 2-0, looking for the sweet four game sweep.
