Kendrick and Milone each going six innings. Kyle gave up four hits, no walks and had four K's. Milone gave up four hits, no walks and had two K's.
Both clubs came alive in the seventh inning the Nationals scored three runs in the top of the seventh on a three run homer by Roger Bernadina off of Michael Schwimer.
In the bottom of the seventh Raul Ibanez had a pinch hit three run homer off of Tyler Clippard.
That was the end of the scoring until the tenth inning when Ryan Zimmerman singled in what was to be the winning run for the Nationals. The Nationals took game one and the winning pitcher was Tom Gorzelanny, now 4-6 this season. Michael Stutes gets the loss and is now 6-2. The Phillies used sixteen different position players and six pitchers.
Just about everyone played a little and the Phillies seem to be in rest mode before the playoffs start. This has been and is a demanding "Final 33" stretch.
Game two, Cliff Lee started for the Phillies went seven innings, allowed three runs, two earned, on eleven hits walked two and had nine K's. He was relieved by Justin De Fratus who was appearing in his second major league game. Justin pitched a scoreless
eighth. David Herndon pitched a scoreless ninth for the Phillies.
The Nationals scored on a solo shot home run from Danny Espinosa in the second, and a RBI single from pitcher Ross Detwiler in the sixth. The third run was Jason Werth scoring on a throwing error by Carlos Ruiz.
Detwiler pitched 7.1 innings for Washington allowing no runs, walked one with three K's and gave up only three hits.
The win goes to Detwiler (3-5) in the 3-0 win. The loss belongs to Cliff Lee now 16-8.
The offense was a no show once again with Lee on the mound.
Phillies lose both ends of the doubleheader after losing three out of four games to the Cardinals. Time to right the ship!
Philadelphia is now 98-56, STILL two games from 100 wins, 14-11 in the "Final 33" with eight games remaining. Should they go 4-4 they will hit the 100 win mark and set a franchise record for wins in a season which is currently 101.
