It was so humid on Midday of 1st July 2011, still the Opening of the 6th PORCH Basketball Tournament were push through even though it was sweeting inside the Huwaylat Gymnasium. It was then re-scheduled from 24th June 2011 to 1st July 2011 because the organizer were not around to grace the occasion as he was recovering from an accident while spending his vacation in the Philippines.
Mr. Mark Rodriquez of Al-Suwaidi Industrial Services gave the Invocation, followed by National Anthem lead by no other than Angelica Saul. As the organizer could not unveil the ceremonial banner it was then unveiled by Mr. & Mrs. Jun Peronilla, followed by hosting of Teams Banner. A welcome address were given by the June Estruche the organizer and followed by Inspirational Talk by the writer who as Filcom President Engr. Elmer Reyes has an appointment with PICE thus it was delegated to me as the current Internal Vice President of Filcom Jubail. The writer quotes his inspirational talk, "Filcom Jubail salutes the people behind this tournament for their collective efforts in giving entertainment not only to the Filipino community but to Jubail Royal Commission populace. Your dedication under the leadership of June Estruche, may "saklay man o wala" is truly an inspiring and encouraging one.
A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you can get them all together, you have a fist. That's how we want you to play. If you have talent with teamwork, you've got a chance to be a championship team.
To us, teamwork is the beauty of our sport, where you have five acting as one. The Dallas Mavericks demolished the Big Three of Miami on their way to this year's NBA Championships with poise and great teamwork. Each team member should be committed to helping the team win. There are only two options regarding commitment. You're either IN or you're OUT. There's no such thing as life in-between. There's always the motivation of wanting to win. Everybody has that. However, a champion needs, in his attitude, a motivation above and beyond winning.
Let us join hands and unite our efforts in making this 6th PORCH basketball tournament a successful one. May the spirit of friendship and camaraderie be always in your heart."
Just after the Inspirational Talk the Oath of Sportsmanship were led by Mr. Arthur Daray PORCH Season 5 Division A Most Valuable Player followed by awarding of Best in Uniform led by Ponch Luna, Chairperson of the Board of Judges and it was Awarded to Al-Suwaidi Industrial Services Team. This program has been emceed by Mr. Roilo Alojado of Hadeed and an Adviser to AFSCOM and SAHI Organization. An official declaration of the opening of the tournament was declared by Rey Tubig, Tournament Director Porch Season 6.
The first match was played by Baguio Mars versus Al-Suwaidi Team and the latter were not so lucky on winning but only 3 points lead. Last Friday 8th July Al-Suwaidi pinned down Strabag with score 95/85 and there was a close coordination between players and coaches. With some inspiring words of course from their Manager, Jimmy King (2005 Bagong Bayani Awardee) who was close in contact with his players. The Gymnasium were so hot because of its humidity outside and the Air-condition was not working well, that is why Al-Suwaidi Cheering Squad led by Andy Cauyan with Mario Aragon, Julius Madrigal, Angel Morillo, Jelmar Orig, Joselito Centeno were so adamant to watch this titillating games. It was not convincing to watch because of its situation where anywhere in the Gymnasium were so sweaty that is why Junjun Bulan, Pikot and Kongkong quit watching the matches and went home. But to Marvin Pilapil and JR Olano it was not so tiring watching because they are players who would play the last game. Even though the gymnasium was humid but respective teams and supporters were there with basketball enthusiast as well.
