"Two Families Destroyed- His and Mine"- Police Officer
These were the word of guilt and impotence that came from the police officer whose shots caused the death of Lazio tifosi Gabriele Sandri yesterday afternoon in northwest Italy.
"I shot (the first shot) in the air, and the second one went off while I was running... never did I aim at anyone" said Officer Luigi Spacatorella in an exclusive interview with Italian daily Corriere della Sera. He said that he should had put the gun back in the holster after that first shot, but that would have been "imprudent" on his part.
Spacatorella said that he "ruined his life and the lives of (Sandri 's) family".
Among the tears and apologies, Spacatorella faces charges of involuntary homicide and explained that he never intended to kill or harm any individual.
Sandri was in the middle of a huge fight between Lazio and Juventus fans. According to police reports, Spacatorella's second shot bounced off a car and into Sandri's neck; killing him on the spot. This incident sparked a series of confrontations between Italian fans and police in the Milan and Rome areas.
