Akron Zips Wheel Away With Victory
The University of Akron Zips took on their rival Kent State University Saturday at Dix stadium and kept the Wagon Wheel.
For those who aren't familiar, the rivalry between these two schools is a big one. They compete each year in football for the Wagon Wheel. The win placed Akron in first in the MAC-East.
It was a close game at the beginning with the Zips grabbing the first touchdown. The Flashes followed with a touchdown in the next run. Leading up to the half, the Flashes would maintain the lead of 21-17. Each team needed to show field goal skills when it came to the second half.
A timeout by Zips coach J.D. Brookhart gave the refs time to review a call on a touchdown that was not rewarded to Akron. After review of the play, the Zips were given the touchdown and the Zips took the lead with 1:28 left in the game. The Flashes reached field goal range to tie the game 24-24 with a 32-yard field goal sending the game into overtime.
During the first overtime, both teams finished with field goals, sending the game into a second overtime with a score of 27-27. The Zips started with the ball in the second overtime. Finishing up their drive, the Zips kicked a field goal, a score of 30-27. Heading towards the stands filled by members of The University of Akron students, AK-ROWDIES, Kent State started their drive. Akron held Kent to a field goal attempt. As the students got louder and louder, Kent State missed the field goal that could of tied the game.
This miss by Kent State's kicker lead the Akron Zips to a 30-27 victory over their rival to win the Wagon Wheel.
