March for Human Rights Unite Tibetans, Chinese, Syrians and Occupy LA



Los Angeles, Ca.. December 10 is the 63rd anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. All throughout the world, people have taken action to support human rights groups. In Los Angeles, Ca, several organization and communities united for one common goal, Human Rights. The members of the following organizations were involved in sponsoring the peaceful 6 kilometer “March for Human Rights”. Visual Artists Guild, Tibetan Association of Southern California, Amnesty International, Amnesty Group 148, Amnesty West, Asia-Pacific Human Rights Foundation, China Democracy Party, Hong Kong Forum, Los Angeles Friends of Tibet,100 Thousand Poets, and West America Chinese Political Refugees Association. The march attracted the attention of onlookers, and was joined by a Syrian Human Rights group as well as members of Occupy LA.


The march began at City Hall in Downtown Los Angeles, and concluded at the Chinese Consulate of Los Angeles. The “March of Human Rights” objective was to highlight the continued repression and negative trend in the People’s Republic of China's (PRC) human rights record. The government of the PRC has taken extraordinary steps in reining in civil society, particularly organizations and individuals involved in rights advocacy and public interest issues and increased attempts to limit freedom of speech and to control the press, the internet, and internet access. As well as being Human Rights day, December 10th is the Anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize of 1989, which was awarded, to His Holiness Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. The Tibetan people are minority group in Tibet, who are experience unacceptable oppression and violations of human rights, this repression has led to 12 self-immolation in Tibet this year alone. Members of the Tibetan community of Southern California, were joined by a large number of Chinese during this march. The Chinese people themsleves also expressed their sorrow at the human rights violations of their own government, as they each wore a T-Shirt with a photograph of political prisoner in China; the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Liu Xiaobo, is still incarcerated in Chinese Prison for activities that are allowed in all democratic nations of the world.


The “March for Human Rights” ended at the Consulate of the People’s Republic of China to demand for the people in China and Tibet their rights to Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Press, Freedom of Assembly, Freedom of Religion and all other Freedoms as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We demand the release of all Prisoners of Conscience and the release of all Political Prisoners.
